7 worst weight loss myths

By: Ashley Evans
(All women stalk)

1. Eliminate Carbohydrates

What most people don't know is that the human brain relies entirely on carbohydrates for energy. While carbohydrates are also the body's main fuel source, you can survive on protein and fat alone but not for long! Instead of eliminating carbohydrates, choose healthy ones like whole grains, fruits and vegetables!

2. Cut out fat

There is a difference between healthy fat and unhealthy fat. Healthy fat found in foods like nuts, nut butters, seeds, avocados, olive oil and olives are actually very beneficial to your health and can actually help you lose weight.

3. "Free" foods don't have calories

You might have been told that there are particular foods, like celery or cucumbers, that are "free foods" because your body burns more calories digesting them than they actually contain; unfortunately, this simply isn't true. While these foods are very low in calories, their calories still contribute to your daily total.

4. Fruit has too much sugar and will make you gain weight

Fruit should be included in a healthy diet. While there is natural sugar found in fruit, there is also fiber which slows down the digestion of the fruit, unlike the sugar found in candy, cakes, soda and juice. Fruit is high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients, all of which your body needs to get or stay healthy.

5. Milk will help you lose weight

You might be shocked to read this one, but there is no true evidence to suggest that milk or milk products will help you lose weight.

6. Don't eat after 8pm

If you wake up everyday at noon, eat breakfast at 1 pm, lunch at 5 pm, a snack at 9 pm and dinner at 1 am, that is no different than if you woke up at 6 am, ate breakfast at 7 am, lunch at 11 am, a snack at 3 pm and dinner at 7 pm. What does matter is that you are eating consistently and not eating all of your calories at one meal.

7. Eliminate Gluten

For those with Celiac disease, a gluten intolerance, a gluten allergy or a gluten sensitivity, the removal of gluten from the diet is necessary. However, for those without any of those conditions, going "gluten-free" isn't necessary when it comes to weight loss. Gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley and rye, is found in many processed foods. Many people lose weight on a gluten-free diet because this causes them to eliminate these types of foods, not just the gluten.

Refined flour vs. wholemeal flour

By: Yamila Papa

Why is believed that white flour is better?

From advertising, we have believed that white flour is better than other flours, but it is time to break down that myth. The refined or white flour is more likely to cause heart diseases and overweight. Since there is not much information about wholemeal and, in many cases, is more expensive, it is preferred white, further its consider more tasty. Refined flour has no nutritional value adequate for feeding people, plus the fact that the process they use to make it white is not among the canons of health. It only provides carbohydrates that help store fat.

What happens when you eat white flour?

Medical studies say that the more refined flour you eat, your body will produce more insulin, which promotes fat storage. That is why you increase weight fast and not only that, but also triglyceride levels, leading to heart diseases. In the mean time, the pancreas has to work harder for insulin to form. When it fails in its function, the person begins to suffer from type 2 diabetes.

What does whole grain flour offers?

Wheat flour or whole grain wheat flour has a different but more concentrated and natural flavor. It provides vitamins, proteins and minerals. It is more nutritious than refined flour because it has no chemical bleaching process, which is why its color is brownish, like the cereals that are contained in it. By consuming whole grain your body receive selenium, iron and calcium, and all the protein and fiber from wheat germ.

Natural sweeteners

"Sugar has become a constant companion in most of our lives. Whether added to our tea or coffee, or found in our favorite packaged foods we find in the supermarket aisles, sugar is hard to remove from our diet all together. With obesity levels shooting up, and greater understanding of just how sugar can wreak havoc on our health, the hunt is on for alternatives.
But there’s a problem. Many sugar substitutes are synthetics that are no better for us than real sugar. What’s more, some of these synthetics – aspartame and acesulfame-K to name just two – have been linked to cancer."

Reflexion

"Why is industry doing nothing about processed foods (which are very harmful), why is the government allowing it? I really do not know, I have no answer and I don't need to have one, because all I know is that my health is my responsibility. My family's health is my responsibility as parent and, therefore, I can not give the responsibility for my health and my family's to the government, or industry, or anyone in particular. But right now there's a lot of information, there are many pages, there's internet, we have access to everything. All we have to do is use reliable sources and studies and, mainly, to try it; do not believe me, do not believe anyone else; you have to try it, try having new habits and realize if they make you feel better or not."

Foods that you should avoid at night

By: Lucía Vázquez

Eating at night, especially if it is close to bedtime, produces a stomach ache that can last until the next day because digestion does not occur as it should. Also, people who want to lose weight have more difficulty because everything they eat at that hour is reserved and is not converted into energy.

What foods to avoid before bedtime:

Junk food
Not only make you feel heavy, but also overload your stomach to digest. Avoid chips, pizzas, cookies, cakes.

Sugar and carbohydrates
Carbohydrates make the blood glucose level rises abruptly, causing us problems in the dream.

Red meat
Red meat is very hard to digest due to the big amount of protein it contains, therefore, eating before bed is not the best idea if you want to have a nice sleep. Also, be careful with the amounts of other meats, not only red, because they end up producing the same effect.

Spicy food
Are hard to digest. Besides, chemicals in spicy food stimulate senses and don't let you sleep and rest well.

Sweet cereals
Cereals are very healthy, but when it comes to night, the ideal is to eat more natural and with no added sugar cereal, reserving these for another meal, preferably breakfast.

Caffeine
Many people know why: it is used caffeine to stay awake at night, for example, when we study. However, caffeine is not just in tea or coffee, but also in other foods such as dark chocolate or colas.

Needless to say, beyond the foods we should avoid at night, perhaps the most important recommendation of all is not to consume large amounts of food at dinner. It is advisable to make several meals a day (five or six) of small amounts of food, at the end of the day the lower intake.

Take care of your liver

Our health depends on the ability we have to eliminate
harmful wastes from our body, either internal or external.

"Normally our daily food waste are expelled from our cells and enter the blood that carry our excretory organs (primarily the liver and kidneys) this is where it is processed and taken to the organs of evacuation."

Why do we have to care so much about our liver? Because the liver has us constantly debugging.
  • It helps filtering the blood and purifies
  • It metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. In fact, it is responsible for converting carbohydrates and fat protein
  • Secretes bile (which helps with the digestion of fats - cholesterol and metabolizes bilirubin etc.)
  • It stores glycogen
  • Converts fructose to glucose
  • Eliminate drugs, hormones and other substances
  • Protects and Detoxifies
